Well, Hello There Boys & Girls

Fin has always been a lover of irony, and today's sample is somewhat personal.

My 'good' laptop threw a wobbly and as a result, I spent over two solid hours with Dell tech support who (we thought) fixed the problems --oops -"issues" which prompted my call to them.

So I wrote up a glowing praise filled account of their efforts and results, only to find that I now cannot access my own blog with said lappy.

So thanks, guys. Seriously, I was impressed by your efforts, if a little less impressed now by some of the results. Next time I have several hours to kill, maybe I'll call back and we can work on this one next.

I swithched from A Dell/windows to an iMac several years ago and haven't looked back. Maybe you should consider one next time. :)

It has been discussed. Would the CDs with photos and the external hard drives filled with thousands of pages of material work if plugged into a mac?

I don't know, Fin. I'm not tech savvy enough to give you an answer. Still, it should be easy enough to find out. Take a CD to the Apple store and see.

I do know I have no crashes, unlike Windows which crashed daily. And based on Windows loss of market share and Apple's increase, I'd guess people are seeing an advantage to switching.

(Maybe Apple should put me on their payroll? Haha!)

Blogger Girl, who takes the brunt of my frustration with new technology, cringes at the thought of my trying to learn a whole new system, and I agree with her...it is as hard on her as on me.

To be fair, the current dell laptop (my third) has worked flawlessly for almost two years. It really has. And one is reluctant to admit just how much time per day has been spent using it. I have archived THOUSANDS of pages of material, and additional THOUSANDS of old slides and photographs. That is a whole lot of ones and zeros to walk away from if the stored info is not compatable with apple.

Completely understand your reluctance. But it's not insurmountable. If I, the Neanderthal poster child, can make the switch, anybody can. Just sayin'. :)

I've had numerous people tell me to switch to mac. It took me years to understand Windows - if that means I'm slow then that's what it means. I can't imagine what it would be like to attempt to learn an entirely new system that is NOTHING like the system you have been using for a long time now. Slightly intriguing - the option of buying yet another computer is not on the horizon right now as there are other priorities, but it is something I have been contemplating.
As for the reason a laptop cannot go onto a blog - does it access other websites? Is otherwise surging the net okay?

Well, my long reply here was instantly trashed when I tried to log into my giggle account.

This morning, lappy did not want to start, but after an agonizing five or ten minutes, which felt MUCH longer, it fixed itself and got going.

SO--the way I am backing up files now, is the way a homeowner sandbags his front door when the water is up to his knees. Focused!
