WOW...or Ouch....or the A Word
This is frankly, please forgive the term, awesome. [owww]
This little box contains virtually an entire human life.
Over fifty years of daily writing.
Favorite music spanning five centuries. Maybe more, as I don’t know what century the Gregorian chants date from.
Over thirty thousand photographs spanning four centuries.
Little color sound movies, lasting from a few seconds to ten minutes, from a dog chasing a ball to airliners landing (barely) in a 40 knot crosswind in Germany.
And all of this used less than 15% of the available space.
In its former form, it occupied at least three large rooms.
Yup…awesome.

Fin,
I know this sounds retarded but you may want to backup your backup...You have a lot of cool stuff to share in that thing...
Handy device. I second fijufic's suggestion. Redundant systems pay off.
It is quite an accomplishment to have organized it to this point, where it is all in one handy little box. That much digital storage would have taken up quite a bit of room in the old days.
You are looking at the backup. The laptop on which I am now working has just under 500 gigabytes of available memory on it.
After my 2007 hard drive crash, I became a firm believer in using an external drive to back up things I want to keep, and continue to do so regularly.
This is a SECOND external backup. Honestly, the archiving is definitely a work in progress, as I spend many hours with Bethany's scanner, copying old photos and transcribing info I wrote down decades ago.
There are still a few file cabinet drawers to go! And I need to keep the two External drives in safe, separate locations from the laptop, too.
That is indeed cool. Your organization is impressive.

S,
Fin is a nut, don't let him fool you...
Cheers Fin...
Bobby
I have an external thingy, too, but just have NOT gotten to saving all my stuff. Soon.... (15 months until retirement LOL)
That is pretty amazing. I am glad that you are backing up your back ups but that doesn't surprise me really.
Ain't technology a wonderful thing? I've got an external hard drive, but it is a bulky thing and holds only 80 Gigs. Time for an upgrade I guess.
Chiang-just think...that tiny little box (should have put a ruler beside it in the pic) has room for more info than all of the computers which were used for early Mercury astronaut space shots. I am told (cannot verify) that it holds more info than the NASA computers during the Apollo 11 shot as well.
Your upgrade should be quite inexpensive---mine was made... in Thailand!!
I'm very impressed Fin- Awesome is definitely appropriate here :)
Ohhhh, you answered my question. I was going to ask..."What IS "it" ? It's an external back-up. Thankyouuu. I'm off this weekend to go buy one somewhere.
