A week from today one will make the transition from living in a climate which has recently resembled Scotland in October to one that might be charitably compared to the inside of a very hot sponge.
This sojourn will last for basically two months. It will, as far as I can remember anyhow, be the longest time I have ever been absent from the place where I have resided for forty years. Ever.
My reasons for leaving could not be happier ones, but the many facets of leaving such a well-worn comfort zone have surprised me to a degree I had not expected. There has been much to do which I have never had to do before. The impending journey has engendered many lists, both paper and computer.
I never lose sight of the fact, however, that the reason for this departure is that I am among the luckiest of men. And for that I am ever grateful.

Well, I hope to be doing the same thing next weekend for the same reason you are. However, I'm only going for a day trip - not several months worth. I'm surprised that you are going for such an extended stay - but then again, having 2 residences affords one to have such luxuries (and really, I am not THAT surprised, lol). Does the Miss. place have AC? I'm assuming it does, but - assumptions aren't always valid.
Are you flying your own plane there or do you reserve that for your area only? Just curious.

Ben, I seriously did consider taking my plane down this time, but economics alone make that a bad choice. It costs to store it there, the local airport is not close, there is a lot of military traffic in the area, the weather there can be real tricky if you can't read it, but mainly it would still mean two nights on the road going and coming, vs doing it all in nine hours for much less money.
OH and yes, there is a/c in Miss which supposedly has fresh filters and is relatively new. With thi hitting 110, it is really hardly a luxury. Like where you are, without it someone could easily die uncomfortably.

Indeed, all facts of flying that I would not have thought of. You can't just tow the thing to your back yard and leave it there until you are ready to use it again!
I'm assuming when you are saying 110 in Mississippi - as I have never seen it anywhere near that hot there - that that is the heat index, what it feels like with temps and humidity combined. I can imagine that high levels of humidity with higher temps could feel pretty darn miserable, indeed. In fact, I spent a good portion of my life living in it.
And yes, living in heat like that, I can attest to the fact that not having some kind of cooling is a death wish in disguise. I have known people and even families living on the streets - as there are now in the Phoenix area - I can only imagine what they must be going through in trying to keep cool. At the same time, I go out in the heat every day - it's just a matter of being adequately prepared.
